What Is The Right Age To Date?
Is It Too Young For Your Teen To Date?
Many young teens today casually date in middle school and, more likely, get more serious about it in high school. But have you ever wondered if it's too young for your child to be in a romantic relationship, that most likely won't lead to marriage? We have seen that these days, we see seniors dating sophomores, and often that is led by extreme age gaps. So what do you do in that kind of situation? Every parent has their own way of navigating the situation, but from a traditional point of view, no child should really be dating at all if the reason is because of butterflies and attraction. Otherwise, all they're doing is just acting on those feelings, and then once they go away, they lose interest. So, in that case, why don't we teach our children about what it means to be in a real relationship with someone, because we could get rid of a lot of misunderstandings in our children, if we kept them away from the dating scene, and simply taught them about life and the big sacrifices it takes to stand side by side with someone?
It may not make sense in the twenty-first century to keep your teen away from the dating scene, but it's okay for them to talk and get to know a person. There is nothing wrong with that, but I think if we as parents established boundaries for our children and looked out for them, we could help guard their hearts. Not only that, if your son has an interest in a young girl at school, and you happen to know of it, lay down the ground rules. It's okay to say, no dating in the house until you're 18. Your teen child might not like it, but it's better to offer your son wisdom about this kind of stuff early on, so they can better go about this kind of thing.
Offering Your Son Advice
Most of all, for those of you who have sons, it's so important to teach them all about how to respect women in general, because in the world today, we see some crazy, weird men out in the world up to no good. Also, ask your son questions about how they would take care of someone if this is what they want in life. Teach him about sacrificial love and what it means to be a man who can provide. It's one thing to think about being a good boyfriend, but that should never be the point long-term. Also, offer him wisdom to better understand how to become secure and whole through Christ. For those of you who believe in Jesus, it's so important that they learn that they can never feel complete with a pretty girl. Only God can do that, but don't force them to think these things; just offer your advice, that's it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that your son will begin to experience sexual thoughts and will fall into temptations. It's not a bad thing; it was how God designed us, and it was meant for something good, but we must teach our sons self-control and allow them not to get in situations where they would be tempted. Teach them that things like physical intimacy only belong in a marriage, and that whenever they're struggling with these kinds of thoughts, it's best to create a safe space in which your son can talk about this kind of stuff openly. I know some parents might feel a little weird about talking about intimacy with their child, but it could help him to better understand how to deal with these desires.
Guarding A Daughter's Heart
If you have a daughter, it is so important to make sure any young teen boy who has an interest in her is someone who will honor you as the parents as well as your daughter. Why, because if you want to protect her, it's your and your spouse's job to make sure this guy isn't sneaking your daughter off somewhere to do weird things. Even if he has no intentions of doing anything stupid, it's important to know what his intentions are from the beginning. In fact, maybe consider having him over for dinner with the family so you all can get to know the young man together. In fact, it's a good way to get a sense of his character and how he would treat your daughter. If he rejects the idea and says he just wants to take her out alone somewhere, take it as a red flag, and keep your daughter away from him, because a guy like that clearly doesn't care about the family's boundaries.
Facing The Reality of Maturity
Obviously, today, a lot of young kids may not like this way of going about it, because they have been conditioned to think that modern dating is the only way to go. We also need to think about the fact that a lot of younger girls tend to lean towards guys who are a couple of years older, because they think they're more mature for whatever reason, when it's most likely just a look thing. The thing is, a boy at 16 or 18 looks and sounds more manly, which is not a bad thing, it's just that even if they're older doesn't mean they're more mature and ready to handle a serious relationship. Anyway, at the end of the day, guarding a daughter's heart is so important because there are going to be men out there who are not interested in pursuing her because of who she is, unfortunately. Not all young men are that way, but a lot of young men don't care about values today, because they only care about what they can get.
The Importance Of A Teens Creativty
Now, you might have your own ideas about how you would establish your boundary regarding dating that won't be exactly what is written here, and that's okay. Most of all, it's okay if you don't want your child to be dating around. A child should absolutely enjoy their life in their young teens, because they're still children growing up. Young teens should also explore many interests as well as their creativity. It's a great way for them to grow as a person, as well as mature, so that when they're older, they have a better idea of what they might want in a relationship one day, especially if they want to get married in the future.
